May Update!

Good morning, Highwood Band Families!

We are quickly approaching the end of what has been another historic year in the Highwood Band Program!

As you may have heard, last week at the Alberta Band Association's Festival of Bands in Red Deer, both our Grade 9 Concert Band as well as our Senior Symphonic Band were awarded Gold Awards for their Superior Performance. This in itself is a tremendous feat as only 30 of these awards were distributed out of the 165 bands that competed.

For our Grade 9 Concert Band, they were one of only TWO bands in the province to achieve this accolade at a Grade 3 level, which is a category many Senior High bands compete at.

Our Senior Symphonic Band was also recognized as the most stand out group in the festival, receiving the Adjudicator's Choice Award! This marks the second time Highwood has received this honor this year, and for our Grade 12 musicians, the fourth time they have received this award since beginning at Highwood. We never take any of these accolades lightly, and for a program to receive one of these awards is an incredible honor. To be recognized consistently over the past few years, especially when competing against larger schools around Canada, highlights the tremendous support for the Arts in High River, the absolute dedication of our students and teachers, as well as the amazing things happening at Senator Riley, Cayley, and Blackie schools.

There is still plenty of music to be had before the end of the semester!

Regional Band Concert at Cayley School - May 29th

Permission forms should be in by now. Only Grade 11/12 members will be performing at Cayley to support our Regional students. Dress is Concert Blacks.

Senator Riley Year End Concert - Tuesday, June 3rd- Symphonic Only

Students should arrive by 6:30 PM at SRMS. Dress is casual. We will be performing a few selections and then joining forces with SRMS to perform the grand finale. Show begins at 7:00 PM.

Jazz @ The Venue - Saturday, June 7th -All Jazz Students 9-12

Show begins at the Venue in High River at 2:00 PM.

Students needing to pick up gear or instruments from Highwood must arrive no later than 1:00pm at Highwood. Doors will be locked at 1:15pm.

Year End Music/Instrument Return

-Symphonic Uniforms can be returned as of today for graduating/non returning members. Male uniforms need to be dry cleaned and returned with the receipt. Female uniforms must be washed at home.

-Grade 9 Band shirts must be returned as soon as possible.

-All home equipment, instruments, and music must be back to Highwood to be cleaned/processed no later than Monday, June 9th.

What a fantastic year it has been! 2 Adjudicator's Choice Awards, 3 Gold Awards, Edmonton, California! We look forward to doing it again next year.
